The first 5 things to do after getting engaged

Firstly... enjoy it.

I know that's easier said than done.

Because within days of getting engaged, the questions usually start rolling in.

Have you set a date?

Have you booked a venue?

What's your colour palette?

How many guests are you inviting?

Suddenly, something that's meant to feel exciting can quickly become overwhelming.

So before you disappear down a Pinterest rabbit hole, here are the first five things I encourage every couple to focus on.

1. TALK ABOUT YOUR PRIORITIES

Before you book anything, sit down together and ask yourselves one simple question.

What do we want this experience to feel like?

Not look like.

Feel like.

Do you want:

  • An intimate celebration?

  • An entire wedding weekend?

  • A relaxed atmosphere?

  • A luxurious experience?

  • A big party?

This conversation will become the foundation for every decision that follows.

2. ESTABLISH A REALISTIC GUEST COUNT

Don't stress about having an exact number.

But having an estimate is incredibly important.

Your guest count will influence:

  • Your venue options

  • Your budget

  • Your transport requirements

  • Your overall logistics

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is avoiding this conversation for too long.

3. BOOK YOUR VENUE BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE

Your venue should always come first.

It influences almost every other decision.

Your aesthetic.

Your supplier team.

Your logistics.

Your timeline.

Everything starts here.

4. THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE

Byron Bay weddings are often destination weddings.

Which means you're not simply planning a wedding day.

You're creating an experience.

Think about:

  • Accommodation

  • Guest transport

  • Welcome drinks

  • Recovery events

You don't have to do everything, but it's worth thinking about early.

5. ASK FOR HELP SOONER THAN YOU THINK

This is probably my biggest piece of advice.

Don't wait until you're overwhelmed.

Wedding planning becomes far more enjoyable when you have support from the beginning.

Whether that's a planner, a venue team or trusted suppliers, having expert guidance early can save countless hours later.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You don't need to have everything figured out immediately.

You don't need a colour palette this week.

And you definitely don't need to book every supplier at once.

Start with the foundations.

The rest will naturally follow.

Because the best weddings aren't built overnight.

They're built one intentional decision at a time.
